GPS - GIS for land professionals:
foresters + surveyors + land real estate agents + land planners + ecologists
biologists + botanists + land appraisers + excavation companies + loggers + engineers

This site is dedicated to hard-working professionals who have to get the job done on a shoestring budget.  If you have thousands of dollars for hardware, software, and training, your time may be wasted here.  For the rest of us, let's get to work and figure out how to get our jobs done as efficiently as possible. We do our best to put out good information about methods, products, and data that we know will work.  We appreciate feedback.  If we have made an error, please let us know so we can correct it.  If there is a better way to do a job, let us know so we can share it.

Information to help you use any GIS data in the field with real time GPS. You can have any map or air photo you need, with survey information, property lines, survey markers, sample plot locations, or any other feature of interest with a GPS "you are here" arrow. Use the system to navigate to any point you select and see your bearing and distance to your location.

Information to help you consolidate GIS data from multiple sources and generate effective maps.

Product Recommendations - tested and proven to work. It's easy to find expensive solutions that cost thousands of dollars and require hours of expensive training and support. Here are some "no frills" off-the-shelf systems that will get you working quickly and effectively at a fraction of the cost. Anyone with a basic understanding of computers can use these systems with a few hours of training.

Free and low cost data - our strategy is to use systems that can utilize raw GIS data that is available from government sources for free or at a nominal cost. Many of the name brand systems require you to use their maps, photos, and data, and pay dearly for it. You may then find that you have little flexibility to customize the proprietary maps for your needs. The products we recommend allow you to mix endless combinations of software and hardware to create a solution that is perfect for your application.

Consultation - we will be happy to discuss how we can help you come up with a low cost solution. We can put together a training program for you and your staff. We also can help you with specific data needs. For example, we routinely do land price studies for real estate buyers, sellers, and land appraisers. We get data directly from public records regarding land sales and combine it with property maps to help our clients better understand land values.

Warnings:

  • Safety:  The big one with GPS is not to rely solely on your GPS to get you back to your vehicle.  Even the most reliable GPS systems are prone to crashes, battery failure, and even operator error.   Your GPS system probably will fail someday; probably at the worst time. You need to always have a paper map and a compass, and know how to use them as your backup system. Working outdoors has a multitude of safety issues,  and you should become familiar with how to best minimize other risks.
  • Legal and Ethical:  These are powerful tools that can be misused in the wrong hands.  Don't get over-confident and over reach the bounds of your profession and expertise.  For example, this site will help you find some great ways to locate property lines.  Do not make a MISREPRESENTATION of a property line based on GPS and GIS procedures we lay out.  Whether done purposefully or out of ignorance, it’s wrong and could cause you huge problems.  You are responsible for understanding your job and how you represent your work.  We recommend you have a conversation with your surveyor and attorney about how you should represent your work.
